France officially the French Republic is a country consisting of metropolitan France in Western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. The metropolitan area of France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. The overseas territories include French Guiana in South America and several islands in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans.

France encompasses medieval cities, alpine villages and Mediterranean beaches. The country is also renowned for its sophisticated cuisine. Lascaux’s ancient cave drawings, Lyon’s Roman theater and the vast Palace of Versailles attest to its rich history.


France is a unitary semi-presidential republic with its capital in Paris, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre. Other major urban areas include Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Avignon, Lille, Cannes, and Nice. Paris is filled with baroque palaces, art-nouveau architecture and spectacular public squares. It also is famed for its fashion houses, classical art museums including the Louvre. Eiffel Tower continues to be the cultural symbol of France while the Champs Elysees remains the heart and soul of Paris.
